More than a hundred Team Dover members celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Base Supply Center Nov. 3.

Dover's Ability One BSC is a division of Blind Industries and Services of Maryland, a nonprofit agency which provides rehabilitation programs and employment opportunities for blind and low-vision people.

In all, there are eight BISM base supply centers that offer office and cleaning supplies along with a wide range of other products for federal customers.

"This was our first one," said Ken Barnett, the vice president of sales and marketing for BISM. "I have taken great pride and satisfaction watching this facility change and grow, and more importantly create opportunities for the blind."

Dover's location employs 26 blind or low-vision employees, including Dover store manager Kim Utley, who was recognized during the ceremony for her contributions at the store.

She expressed her appreciation for Ability One after an auto accident 27 years ago changed her life forever.

"This job has afforded me the opportunity to be independent, buy a home, raise a family and put one of my two children through college," she said. "I am very proud of this place and all of our associates who continually strive to provide you with the best customer service we can."

"There's a great turn out here today, a number of reservists, active duty and civilians here to show their support for (the BSC's) efforts," said Col. Scott Durham, the 512th Airlift Wing commander. "We receive quality products with a quick turnaround; it all boils down to superior customer service which ensures our mission accomplishment."

Barnett, who originally opened and managed the Dover BSC, closed his speech also focusing on BISM's mission - creating opportunities for the blind.

He said, "Every time, you buy a product that says Skilcraft or shop from here, you are helping a visually impaired person be independent all across the nation."
