Reservists dominate Dover’s basketball season

DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. --  Players from the 512th Mission Support Squadron team kicked off the intramural basketball season with a strong start, currently undefeated with seven wins under their belt.

In the past, the Liberty Wing forfeited most games due to lack of qualified players. This was, in part, due to a former policy which restricted reservist participation.

"Up until this year, local reservists couldn't even participate if they weren't on orders for 30 days or more," said Hakim Tutt, from the 512th Mission Support Squadron.

The change in procedures, coupled with passion and talent, proved to be the catalyst needed for the reservists to take the lead this season.

"We are back this year to make our presence known," said Tutt, who believes his players make up a quick, solid team. "Now that we're able to invite all interested 512th Airlift Wing reservists out to play, those who reside in the local areas are able to participate each week, and that gives the team some continuity."

Reservists, most of whom work full-time civilian positions in addition to their Reserve duty, travel from various parts of Delaware and Maryland to participate in the evening games on base.

"Intramural basketball has been an ongoing tradition here for more than 10 years," said Staff Sgt. Martin Davis, 436th Services Squadron fitness center sports program director. "The program is sponsored by the Services Squadron and serves as a morale booster for Team Dover."

Over the past two months of the basketball season, the Reserve team has already established a fan base.

Airman 1st Class Kris Mack, 3rd Airlift Squadron C-17 loadmaster, comes out to the games to cheer on his cousin, who plays on the Reserve team.

"With the Air Force promoting fitness to become a part of a lifestyle, playing basketball is one good way to stay in shape," said Airman Mack, who also plays for his squadron's team.
