Staff Sgt. Mark Shortt, a supply technician with the Air Force Reserve's 512th Civil Engineer Squadron at Dover Air Force Base, Del., underwent a kidney transplant at John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Md., Sept. 22. In 2006, he?d contracted a viral antibody, which attacked both his kidneys leading to their failure in August 2007. Now that he's had the transplant he is off dialysis but must take medication for the rest of his life. He now takes 15 medications six times a day. (U.S. Air Force photo/Capt. Marnee A.C. Losurdo)
