In an effort to promote fitness and help unit members prepare for their physical fitness test the 512th Airlift Wing is participating in the Lieutenant Governor’s Challenge starting Feb. 4.

All 512th AW members are encouraged to participate in the 12-week program that has individuals track their activities and earn points based on every 30 minutes of movement, said Tech. Sgt. Kim Snyder, 512th AW fitness coordinator.

There are 60 activities, which range from gardening to running. The more intense the activity, the higher the point value earned, she added. Based on how many points are earned, participants are eligible for a gold, silver or bronze medal.

The fitness challenge was started because too few Delawareans are getting the recommended amount of physical activity and to get Delawareans motivated to have a more active and healthier lifestyle, said Jill Morrison, special assistant to the Lt. Gov. John C. Carney, Jr.

To participate, all one needs to do is pick up the Fitness Challenge Booklet from unit first sergeants, complete the registration card located in the back of the booklet, and send it to Sergeant Snyder, who works in the 512th AW Command Staff section. Then, members need to use the booklet’s activity log to track their daily physical activity for three months and send the completed award card to Sergeant Snyder by May 12.

“Whether you received a poor or an excellent on the fitness test, all wing members can benefit by participating in this program,” said Sergeant Snyder.

“This program is free and low impact, so it won’t hurt anybody, and it’s a structured program that helps people build and maintain their own fitness regime,” said Maj. Dawn Crews-Seams, 512th AW executive officer, who participated in the program to prepare for her first fitness test.
