As the presidential primaries are fast approaching and debates are heating up, Airmen and federal employees must follow strict guidelines during the political season to ensure no wrongdoing.

Department of Defense Directive 1344.10 and Air Force Instruction 51-902 outline what active duty service members are permitted and restricted from doing while acting in an official capacity. Service members who violate these directives could face punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

"SUBJECT: Guidance for Continuation of Operations During a Lapse of Appropriations

Appropriations provided under the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015 (P.L. 113-235) expire at 11:59 PM on Wednesday, September 30, 2015. The Administration does not want a lapse in appropriations, which would result in a government shutdown, to occur. The Administration is willing to work with the Congress to enact a short-term continuing resolution to fund critical Government operations and allow Congress the time to complete the full year 2016 appropriations. The Secretary and I hope that the Congress will provide the Department with a CR or an appropriations bill for Defense activities during Fiscal Year 2016. However, prudent management requires that Department be prepared for the possibility of a lapse in appropriations.

<![CDATA[Team Dover participates in Air Force Community Partnership initiative]]> http://www.512aw.afrc.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123457894 Air Force changes require coordination from all involved in the change and Team Dover and Kent County community members are working side-by-side through Team Dover's P4 initiatives-- Public-Public; Public-Private Partnership-- to help make change possible.

The program, commonly known as "P4," is an Air Force-level program that embraces the use of partnerships to help trim base operating costs. This initiative is a direct response to language included in section 331 of the fiscal 2013 defense authorization bill, which allows installations to enter into intergovernmental support agreements with local governments to provide, receive or share support services for most municipal functions. Such agreements have proven successful at the small handful of installations where they have been implemented under pilot programs, but the new authority permits all military installations to partner with host communities to obtain or provide support services.

It is a motto that SERE specialists here at Dover AFB, Delaware, instill in aircrews, giving them the confidence they need to embark on any mission across the world. Team Dover Airmen recently set out to hone their survival skills in combat survival training at Blackbird State Forest, and in water survival training in the Delaware Bay, July 16-17, 2015.

There are only two SERE specialists assigned to the 436th Operations Support Squadron, but they are responsible for providing survival training to more than 1,000 aircrew members, including aircrews from the Air National Guard and Reserves from neighboring states.

<![CDATA[Remembering Memorial Day]]> http://www.512aw.afrc.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123448589 For many, Memorial Day is the official start of summer and is synonymous with barbeques, parades, pool parties, and fun with family and friends. Now, as Chief of Safety, I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to encourage everyone to enjoy this holiday and long weekend - safely. But I also want everyone to reflect on why we celebrate this sacred holiday.

On Memorial Day we remember all American military members who sacrificed their lives in service to our great nation. This is different from Veterans Day - a day to honor all veterans: deceased, living, and those currently serving. Initially dubbed "Decoration Day," Memorial Day began in May of 1868, three years after the Civil War ended. It was established to pay respects to the Civil War's fallen by decorating their graves with flowers. While there is debate as to where the first observance occurred, the first large observance was held at Arlington National Cemetery. Sometime after World War I, Memorial Day was expanded to honor the fallen of all American wars. Finally, in 1971 Memorial Day officially became a national holiday, celebrated on the last Monday in May through an act of Congress.
