9/6/2012 - DOVER, Del. -- An appearance by a miniature C-17 Globemaster at Dover International Speedway here has been scrapped due to end-of-fiscal-year budget constraints.
The driveable replica called the Spirit of Hope, Liberty and Freedom was to be featured in a Military Expo Village sponsored by USO and Dover Motorsports during a NASCAR race at the end of September.
The mini C-17 started as a utility vehicle and was modified over a 5-year period by volunteers using donated time and material. It was finished in 2004 and is maintained by members of the Air Force Reserve's 315th Airlift Wing, an associate unit of the active-duty 437th AW at Charleston AFB.
The Military Expo Village will be open 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Sept. 28; 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 29; and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 30.
More than 200,000 people are expected to attend the race over the weekend.
